Your Mondays Matter to God

The alarm clock goes off, I shuffle through my morning routine, make it into the office, and sit down at my cubicle. It’s back to the workweek grind. Spreadsheets, meetings, reports, KPIs, and by lunchtime on Monday, my Sunday morning worship time feels like a completely different life.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I actually like my work. But for years, I felt this disconnect between Sunday and Monday. I knew that I still needed to be a Christian at work, but I didn’t have the mindset that my day-to-day work was actually part of my ministry for God.

Does the Creator of the universe care about my spreadsheets, reports, and blog posts the same way He cares about the work of the missionaries, the preachers, and Sunday School teachers?

If you have ever felt, like I did, that your Monday through Friday job as a teacher, receptionist, or dental hygienist wasn’t as significant as those doing “sacred” work in the Church, let me tell you what I once heard which changed my life: Your work matters to God.

Every lesson that you teach to your students.

Every financial report you complete for your boss.

Every field you plow with your tractor.

God cares about all of that.

The God that knows the number of hairs on your head (Matthew 10:30) cares about every aspect of your life – including the professional part. God, Himself a worker, intended work to be a fulfilling part of our human existence. In fact, work was a part of life in the garden of Eden, even before the Fall. As Genesis 2:15 says, “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it” (NRSV, emphasis added).

Some people will be called to move to a different country to preach the Gospel, but many of us will be called to serve God exactly where we already are, which includes the job we hold. Paul reminds the Corinthians of this when he writes to them, “Let each of you remain in the condition in which you were called” (1 Corinthians 7:20, NRSV).

God wants to be with you in every part of your life – from Sunday morning right on into Monday and straight through until Friday afternoon.

In the Bible, God says a lot about work. Here are some of those verses to help remind you that He cares about your Monday through Friday:

Genesis 2:15 “The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to till it and keep it.”

Proverbs 31:16 “She considers a field and buys it; with the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard. She girds herself with strength, and makes her arms strong. She perceives that her merchandise is profitable.”

Colossians 3:23 “Whatever your task, put yourself into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters.”

Acts 18:3 “Paul went to see them and, because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them, and they worked together – by trade they were tentmakers.”
